Background
1312: The Meaning, Origin, and Social Context of the Notorious Number
The number 1312 also appears periodically, in spray painted on buildings, or from a status update on Facebook. To most, it is nothing more than a number, but to others who are part of street protest or anti-cop protests, it signifies much. Basically, 1312 is the numerical representation of the letters ACAB, which spelt out is "All Cops Are Bastards."

How This Number Is Formed

The number 1312 is obtained by replacing the letter of ACAB with the numbers represented alphabetically:
  • A = 1
  • C = 3
  • A = 1
  • B = 2
ACAB thus translates to 1312. Its application allows this divisive message to be expressed less obviously, especially in public places or online forums that may monitor sensitive content.

The Origins of ACAB and 1312

The acronym ACAB itself is several decades old, more particularly among punk and skinhead subcultures and European anti-police activists. The acronym was initially used as a demonstration of protest against what were deemed to be arbitrary, corrupt, or oppressive behavior by police officers. ACAB later also symbolized resistance against authority and an oppressive legal establishment.1312 then was a numeric equivalent of ACAB so that users could express their view with less employment of overt language that could lead to legal issues or censorship. In some circles, having the number 1312 on clothing, labels, or social media is now one of solidarity and identification.1312 usage is not just hate but also is associated with criticism of police brutality, police violence, or institutional injustice, and discriminatory law enforcement. In different mass demonstrations, particularly the ones that made known the issue of police brutality, this symbol became a powerful expression of public rage.Nevertheless, one needs to note that 1312 is offensive and can provoke negative reactions. The symbol is found to be offensive by the police and a section of society, to the extent of inciting violence against the police. Therefore, its context and understanding its meaning are necessary. The number 1312 is more than just a collection of random numbers. It is the numerical code for ACAB, which stands for an unfavorable critique of the police and institutionalized injustice. Arising from activist and punk counter-culture, 1312 is now in common usage throughout all forms of media from hard print to virtual spaces. While controversial, understanding its background and history makes this recognizably as part of social and cultural history, not random numbers. As a sidelight, to the general public, understanding of the meaning of 1312 can make understanding of the phenomenon of modern protest and the hidden messages in what seem to be innocuous but meaningful symbols possible.
