Fourth Tower and Futuristic Skyloop
The project entails the construction of a new, 55-story fourth hotel tower comprising 570 suites in an innovative, luxurious design. The tower was envisioned by award-winning architect Moshe Safdie, the mastermind behind the iconic three-tower Marina Bay Sands complex connected by SkyPark. One of the main features of the expansion is Skyloop, a rooftop amenity that stretches over 76,000 square feet. Skyloop will be a combination of green gardens, high-end restaurants, an infinity pool, private cabanas, and a wellness center. The design has a biophilic design sensibility, with architectural elements blending into nature for an uninterrupted experience for guests.Entertainment Arena and MICE Facilities
In addition to the hotel, MBS will also include a 15,000-seat capacity entertainment arena, designed by architectural firm Populous—the same folks who designed the Sphere in Las Vegas and the O2 Arena in London. The arena will be a new attraction for international concerts, world-class performances, and indoor sporting events.Additionally, the IR2 project will also feature over 200,000 square feet of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) space and add to its current inventory of facilities. With this development, Singapore should be able to further establish itself as an international business meetings hub in the Asia-Pacific region.Schedule and Cost Overruns
The expansion project was originally budgeted for US$3.3 billion. Due to rising land costs, new design requirements, and pre-opening costs, the cost has ballooned to between US$8–9 billion. It began building in July 2025 and was set to be finished by July 2029. However, it is anticipated to open fully in early 2031. Despite the delay, its developer remains optimistic that the project will be a long-term investment with enormous economic returns.Focus on Sustainability
The Marina Bay Sands expansion will focus not only on luxury but also on environmental sustainability. The developer will introduce the use of low-carbon materials, a green construction waste management system, and an environmentally friendly design that blends with the cityscape.Prime Minister Lawrence Wong described the project as a key part of the Marina Bay renewal. He called the MBS expansion "the next chapter" in Singapore's effort to revitalize the southern waterfront, following the NS Square development and other waterfront revitalizations.A Symbol of Singapore's Global Ambition
Since its opening in 2010, Marina Bay Sands has expanded to become a worldwide icon with its stunning design, a combination of modern architecture and multi-use functionality. Through the IR2 development, Singapore is not only expanding its architectural icon but also solidifying its position as a global tourism, entertainment, and business hub. When MBS is completed, it will offer a more future-forward and world-class experience—from entertainment and hotels to business facilities—which will further enhance Singapore's appeal to foreign tourists and investors.
